Welcome to the website of the 21st Workshop on Antarctic Meteorology and Climate (WAMC)! The 21st WAMC will be hosted by the Naval Information Warfare Center (NIWC) and will be held in Charleston, South Carolina, USA, 16-18 June 2026 at the Waterfront/Downtown Hilton Garden Inn on Lockwood Drive. It is a hybrid meeting with in-person and virtual options. This workshop is organized annually by members of the WAMC Planning Committee across the globe.
There will be no registration or abstract fees this year!
The WAMC brings together those with common interests in Antarctic meteorology, climate, forecasting and related disciplines. The three-day event will focus on observational networks, numerical modeling, weather forecasting, operational/logistical interests, and Antarctic meteorological and climate research from contributors around the world. As in the past, the annual activities and status of the international Antarctic automatic weather station (AWS) network and numerical modeling systems used for both operations or research will be addressed, along with feedback and results from their user communities. There will be discussions on the relationships among international efforts and Antarctic weather forecasting, logistical support, and science.
New this year will be a dedicated breakout working group devoted exclusively to the engineering, design, installation, and maintenance of automated weather stations and other environmental sensing systems located on and around the Antarctic continent. This session on AWS technology will provide a deep dive into the challenges faced in the varied automated systems currently used throughout Antarctica, and hopefully lead to discussions about system commonality, placement strategy, and data transport and availability.
