This page is in support of the NZ-US Sea Ice Monitoring Catalyst Project. The animation below shows the last ~two weeks of GIF images of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) polar orbiting satellite data from the Suomi-NPP, NOAA-20, and NOAA-21 satellites, using the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument data. Each image contains passes from one qualifying satellite for that image time. The region is centered on 77 S, 170 E, with the Ross Sea (middle, upper right), the Ross Ice Shelf (bottom), and East Antarctica (left) included in the field of view. Note: beginning with imagery on 18 August 2026, brightness temperature scaling was applied to the data, and an image enhancement was applied to the GIF output shown in this animation.
The animation shows imagery from the past ~two weeks. All GIF images and AREA files are archived and can be downloaded from our THREDDS catalog.
Animation useful tips
The animation is built using the HAniS webapp (HTML5 AnimationS, an HTML5-based animator for the web, Copyright© 2014-2026 by StormQuest Technologies and Tom Whittaker). Some useful tips:
- Use the +/- buttons to increase/decrease the speed of the animation
- Click the blue tiles to remove images from the animation. Click the tile again to include the image.
- To zoom, click the Zoom button, then click on the images in the animation. Click and drag to view different areas of the image.
- The Capture button saves a .png file of the image in the animation being shown, preserving any zoom factor that was applied (a dialogue prompt will appear to specify filename to be saved).
- The Make MP4 button saves a .mp4 file of the animation of all images currently being animated, preserving any zoom factor that was applied (a dialogue prompt will appear to specify filename to be saved).
